Domestic Violence as a Precursor for Divorce Analysis of Women’s Lived Experiences in Kerala

Abstract

Violence against women is a serious and under-reported issue in India. This study explores the relationship between divorce and violence against women in Kerala, India. Data was collected from eighteen divorced women living in Ernakulam. The narratives identify domestic violence as a key factor leading to divorce. The research findings highlight a paradoxical situation wherein rising divorce rates and violence against women coexist with advancement in education, economy, and technology. Social workers and mental health professionals need to develop comprehensive action plans on the critical role of support systems in mitigating the impact of violence on women, families and society
