Muslim Migrants’ Children and their Educational Outcome Aspirations and Challenges
Abstract
Education holds the potential to significantly enhance the socio-economic conditions of individuals, families, and communities. This study aims to investigate how migration affects the educational outcomes of children left behind in eastern Uttar Pradesh while their fathers work for their livelihood in the Gulf countries. Specifically, it explores the experiences of migrant workers in the Gulf and examines its impact on the education of their children left behind. The findings reveal that inadequate supervision negatively impacts children's education. Moreover, the availability of better job opportunities in Gulf countries, facilitated by social networks and familial migration, often encourage these children to prioritise migration over higher education. This shift in focus away from educational attainment further hampers their educational outcomes.
