Edmarie Pretorius, Victor Chikadzi

Abstract

This article reviews challenges impeding the implementation of income-generating projects managed by the Tembisa/Kempton Park Development Centre, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Gauteng, South Africa. A qualitative approach was applied and primary data was used to illustrate the challenges encountered by beneficiaryies during the implementation of income-generating projects as an enterprise strategy to alleviate poverty. To contextualise the study, applicable  approaches to community development, poverty as a phenomenon and income generating projects as an enter prise strategy to poverty alleviation are described. The findings showed that beneficiaryies experienced specific challenges on different levels, which influenced the effective implementation of the income-generating projects as enterprise strategies to poverty alleviation.
