Gender and HIV/AIDS: A Comparative Study of Civil Society Organisations from Karnataka and West Bengal
Abstract
With HIV/AIDS emerging as a major health challenge since the late 1980s, several Civil
Society Organisations (CSOs) started providing health care services to HIV positive
people. The paper analyses the role of two CSOs from the service delivery perspective.
The study found that while CSOs are supplementing the state in enhancing accessibil-
ity to HIV health care, they have certain limitations. The results further revealed that the
West Bengal based organisations have performed better than Karnataka in delivery
of services as they have adopted strategies that directly address the health needs of
people residing in rural areas.
