Social Work Education in Italy: History and the Present Scenario
Abstract
This article begins with a brief historical contextualisation of the development of social
work education in Italy. It then goes on to describe the curriculum structure and the
challenges faced by the social work discipline in designing and developing a suitable
curriculum that is sufficiently oriented towards enhancing competencies. As social work
education in Italy has always been under the ambit of sociology, the author proposes
that social work be recognised as an autonomous discipline within the academia and
that the faculty for social work be augmented. The article also discusses the several
initiatives undertaken towards the Europeanisation of social work education within the
Socrates/Erasmus programme with an emphasis on research and doctoral studies.
